People are so concerned about liberals today and about how society has degenerated because of alternative lifestyles (e.g. homosexuals), immigrants, etc.
Perhaps the "liberal" backlash is a reaction against what is perceived as stifling conservatism. The more people think our rights are taken away, the more we're going to see a push for same sex marriage, affirmative action, etc. It's like saying the more oppressive society becomes, the more there'll be people who are way out of the mainstream pushing the envelope.
