American Gospel

Please read a book by Jon Meacham called American Gospel. In it he makes the distinction between public religion and private religion and the fact that most of the Founding Fathers weren't Christian, and if they were (Franklin was), they wanted to have freedom of religion and freedom from government intervention in religion because of the turmoil religion caused in Europe. They wanted a country where people could have freedom of con-
science, where they could worship as they pleased, even if it meant worshipping a non-Christian religion.

As Meacham said in his book about the American people, "Many believe, but not all must."

This is the freedom given to us by the Constitution.
